Thought-Process to Discover Knowledge

Welcome to nubtrek.

Books and other education websites provide "matter-of-fact" knowledge. Instead, nubtrek provides a thought-process to discover knowledge.

In each of the topic, the outline of the thought-process, for that topic, is provided for learners and educators.

### Tally and Table Representation of Data

With examples, the tally and table representations are introduced.

In a plate, oranges, apples, bananas, and mangoes were available. A group of students took one fruit each as given in the data.

The data is given as

2 students took oranges
2 students took apples
5 students took mangoes
1 student took banana

Continuing on, the next student takes an orange, and then the following student takes a mango. How to represent this on-going data collection?

• change the 2 oranges to 3; and 5 mangoes to 6
• change the 2 oranges to 3; and 5 mangoes to 6
• the entire data has to be counted from the beginning

The answer is "change the 2 oranges to 3; and 5 mangoes to 6"

To continue on an on-going data collection, the "tally" representation helps. The data is given as

2 students took oranges
2 students took apples
5 students took mangoes
1 student took banana

This is given in tally representation in the figure. Note the number of vertical lines given in each row. The data value 2 is represented with 2 vertical lines. A collection of 5 is represented with a diagonal line on four vertical lines.

Continuing on, the next student takes an orange, and then the following student takes a mango. The tally representation is updated easily. The data is given as

3 students took oranges
2 students took apples
6 students took mangoes
1 student took banana

This is given in tally representation in the figure.

Which of the following is a meaning for the word "tally"?

• current amount; ongoing count
• current amount; ongoing count
• a thing resembling animal's tail

The answer is "current amount; ongoing count".

What is the term used to refer to counting using vertical line marks or bars?

• Pronunciation : Say the answer once

Consider the tally representation of data given in the figure. Is it simple to find the number of students who took mangoes?

• it is not as easy as when the number of students are fewer
• it is not as easy as when the number of students are fewer
• it is remains easy even for large number of students

The answer is "it is not as easy as when the number of students are fewer"

Tally representation is suitable to record an on-going data collection. Once the data collection is completed, the same can be given in the tabular form. The data given in tally is equivalently given in a "table". This representation is also called "tabulation of data".

Which of the following is a meaning for the word "table"?

• a flat rectangular surface in vertical or horizontal
• a flat rectangular surface in vertical or horizontal
• that can be molded into a shape without breaking

The answer is "a flat rectangular surface". The surface can be vertical with inscriptions.

What is the term used to refer "data given in list form in columns and rows"?

• Pronunciation : Say the answer once
Presenting Data with Tally Marks : Vertical bars (that are grouped into 5) is used to collect data.
